Audience feedback

Audience Feedback

The audience which I showed our ruff cut to really loved it. They thought that the footage which we had got was very meaningful and worked very well with the choice of song. They could tell what the narrative was about which meant that the editing was done well due to the fact they could tell the storyline. There is a few weaknesses and they were down to timing in the rough cut. We took footage of some of the same shots when the floor was wet and dry and we got a bit muddled when editing this footage. The audience noticed that we need to change one of the shots from having dry floor to wet floor as the bedroom has flooded at this point. I agree that we need to go back and just keeping checking what shots have been flooded and which ones haven't.

What do you think of the footage?

I really like the footage and I think it works well with your song. It's interesting to watch and you don't get bored at all watching the video. The shot which I like the most is the Ariel shot of Isa in the bed.

Can you tell what the narrative is?
Yes, it's a very clear narrative, the only thing which I've noticed is that at one point when the bedroom has flooded, there is a shot where the bedroom goes back to being dry. This doesn't make much sense, so I think this may be a mistake.

Do you think the editing fits well with the song?
Yes, it all flows really well, there is a part where Isa pulls her hand together and the lyrics read 'and pull' which fits particularly well. The band footage works really well with the other parts and has been edited in to work well with the lip sync as it looks like the singer is really singing. There is only one part towards the end of the song where the  singer is slightly out of time but it just needs changing very slightly.

Is there anything you think we could improve on?

I think all you need to work on is making sure that the timing on everything works well and make sure that it flows slightly better than it does at the moment. I think the shot where the taps are running doesn't look quite right and maybe should be swapped for another shot. It's not a very interesting shot as well as not looking as clean as the others. Also towards the end its a bit mix and match. It needs to be flow more towards the end and needs something to happen with the last shot.

What's your overall view?
I really like it and I don't think there is much to do. If that was your final piece I would be surprised. The editing has been done really well and the footage is amazing. The storyline makes sense however i do think that there are some cuts in there that need to be changed and adapted in order to make it flow better.

Final cut evaluation

We looked though our second rough cut and realised there were a few changed we had to make. The main one was that there were a lot of erros when it came to the order of the narrative. For example, Isa gets out the bed but then theres a flash back of her back in it, or the fact that there is water on the floor before the bath has over flowed. To fix this we simply swapped around a few shots or replaced it with others. What we realised by doing this second cut was that in the previous shots there was a lot more footage than we had realised as we had dismissed a few of the really long shots and put it in the 'junk' bin. However, what i think really saved this second version is the fact that we started to space out the shots so the whole video was smoother to watch as a whole and created a much more cinematic effect.
We also found that the lip syncing wasn't also on point which needed to ne changed it is just made the whole music video look a lot more unprofessional as it became obvious that these the two artists were not actually a band and that she was just singing and he was just playing over a track. This was easily changed by using the time proxy to help us get the shots in time with the track.
The big change though was doing the special effect at the end of Isa dissolving into multi-coloured inks in the bath, the way we did it is on the shoot day we took a birds eye view shot of the girl fully under the water lying in the bath and then we took a birds eye view shot of the bath when it was empty as well, by using these two templates an effect called bubble dissolve was used to slowly move from one shot into the other. But the next step was the ink, on the shoot day we had made ink bombs which exploded in the bath producing this mixture of ink swells in the bath which could be used to know the colours that we wanted to use but for the ink to actually dissolve this girl, what happened was that we turned small parts of her into blocks and dissolved it and then went on the amplify the colours and make it more obvious as to what was happening to her.
Also what we did was use a process called colouring - which is done on an American programme called ‘Coloring’. What it does is change the amount of colours so that they match each other, therefore as we used a lot of white and sometimes the whites wouldn’t match up - maybe because of the time of day had changed or there was a slightly different light set up, etc. - this is when we can use this process so that the colour balance in the image looks correct. Colouring was also used to make it look quite de-saturated and dark in order to keep the style for one quite grungy and also emphasis the dark and troubled message that we are presenting in our music video, we thought de-saturating it would pull off this look after watching the music videos that Birdy had done which use a similar colour process.

Evaluation of rough cut edit

When we looked back on our footage we were very pleased with the result. The first thing we did was rename all of the shots so that we could identify them. All our best shots we put 111 after so that we knew which ones we may reuse. After this we separated them into different bins which we simply names performance, bedroom and bathroom.
In our heads we had a rough idea of what we were going to do and plus we had the story board to help us. However one thing we didn't think about was the fact that all our performance cuts constantly had ink dripping down them. This made us worry that it wouldn't properly fit in with the rest of the clips. Therefore we decided that the video would probably have to be much more narrative based then we had perceived. We roughly put all the narrative down so it was in a sensible order then began cutting performance in. We also had to adjust where clips went because if they were not cut in time to the beat then it would be very uncomfortable to watch. Another thing we had to take into account was not to make clips too long as it could cause the video to look boring and slow moving, this was hard as Fineshrine is quite a slow song.
Some of the shots we thought worked best were the slow motion shots. This caused us to slow down some of our normal paced clips, however this sometimes caused then to look quite jumpy. We fixed this problem by changing the shots into HD which allowed the shot to move more smoothly. The shot where this looked best is when Isa climber into the bath and looked up as the water would over flow the edges and all the photos scattered in slow motion, creating as almost surreal effect.
One of our major issues was that we began cutting too fast which meant that the song was only half way through by the time we had finished the narrative, causeing us to jump back to previous footage as a flashback which didn't suit our music video at all. So as not to loose everything we doubled the footage and created a new one which we could mess around on. This actually turned out to be the better cut as it all fitted together a lot more nicely. This is the current version we are working on, the last thing we need to do is combind isa going underwater and the explosion of colour to make it look as if shes dissolving which we will do in after effects.

Evaluation of Website (first draft)

We have began to create a website for our band and promote and sell the artists image and video. Before we did this we did some research into similar bands so that we could get the look for our video right.

To create the website we used the website editor WIX which gave us templates which then applied our own pictures and text which allowed us to make the website more personal and our own. As a group we decided that the look we wanted to go for was a clean and simple one so as not to over complicate or take away from the images we put into it.
Once we had selected the template we split the website into different sections these being home, about the band, behind the scenes, tour, dates, news, new music videos and contact information. Having taken a quite a few photos on the day we could then scatted them around the website, almost like we did on the day. A problem we have encountered is that we got too carried away with taking pictures of the shoot and haven't spent enough time taking pictures of the band. We are going to solve this by setting up a shoot for the band then adding these photos to our website.

This is our first draft of our website but I am content with how it looks so far. Once we have taken photos of the band it should be complete, we are thinking further into putting a time lapse we created on shoot day on the website as a lot of band similar to ours seem to do this.

Shoot day evaluation

The day before we shot we set up making the surroundings waterproof. We did this by getting bags full of sand and placing them around the perimeter we wanted, then put a water proof lining on top of it. After this, we got a checkered floor and put it as the base of our set followed by the walls and the bath. The reason we decided to do the bathroom first is because we thought it would be the most challenging set.
On the day of the shoot we were quite well prepared, we had all our props together which included inks, photographs and keyboard. However, before we started shooting we had to fill the bath up with water which took a while.
I wasn't too sure about our set when I first saw it as it wasn't completely how I invisioned it. However, once they added lighting and we scattered the photos on the floor it looked even better then I thought it would. We had a checkered floor and plain walls with a bath in the middle of the set. This was because if we had put anything else in it then it could have began to look over cluttered as it would have clashed with all the photos on the floor. I think overall it really reached the look we were going for as we pulled off the grungy look however kept it looking clean and uncomplicated.
We divided the rolls, those of which being photographer, director, cameraman and someone who made sure we included all the shots we needed. This spread the work load out evenly and made the whole process a lot more smooth and easy.
I think the area I helped out with the most was helping changing sets as once the bath scene was over we had to move all the tiles and walls in order for the next scene to commence. This was okay as the floor was waterproof however the next scene was set on carpet which made the whole process a lot harder and longer. I therefore had to clean up the water with the scoop end of a dustpan and brush. It took and extreamly long time, especially as we were running low on time.
As I previously said, a problem we encountered while shooting was the fact that we began to run out of time after a while. This was not helped by the fact that we couldn't find our main performer 5 minutes before we were about to begin shooting. We set 5 people out to go find her as we were still setting up. On the bright side we found her just in time so we were saved. Other problems included not being able to go right up close in the set as there was water all over the floor and we couldn't risk getting the camera wet, however we overcame this by using ariel shots with a camera attatched to a crane which could swoop down to get the shots we needed.
I think the most successful part of the day was filming Isa in the bath as she got in because due to it being and ariel shot, when she lay down you could see the water pushing away all the photos which were strewn around her, making it look as if she had some kind of force field around her. I hadn't expected it to look this good so we were all very pleased. Further successes of the day included dripping ink on the photos to make it look as if they were running which we had also been worrying about due to the fact that the actual photos wouldn't run, however it looked very realistic so we were pleased with that.
I'm not sure which part of the set I wish could have gone better as I was pretty pleased with most of it. I think we could have timed things better as we did cut it pretty close as we thought we would be finished at 3 and ended up finishing at 5:30. This however wasn't really an issue, maybe next time we should be more realistic with our timings though.
One thing I am most pleased with is that on the day our group worked extreamly well as a team, I had been worried about this previously as I had seen many groups fall out on shoot day and I hoped that wouldn't include us. However I think as we had allocated roles it helped us out massively as we didn't get annoyed at one person not helping or the other way round. We all contributed evenly and I couldn't have been happier.
As far as album artwork and websites go I think we did it pretty well considering we hadn't shot anything before we did it. It all goes quite nicely together, the main thing doing our shoot has helped us with is the pictures that we can now include on our website.

Further ink experiments

We needed to test out the inks that we had brought to ensure that they worked in the same way and also to test and colours and see how they mixed. I got a fish tank and dripped the ink cartages into the water. Collecting a range of evidence; this being photographs as well as recordings.

I also placed the photographs into the water to see how they would react to the water. The photographs did not rein at all. To create an effect where the ink would run if you drip the ink onto the photograph while it is wet the ink sinks into the image, giving the effect that the ink in the photograph has run.

Looking at how the photographs react to water. When you put the ink onto of the wet photograph the ink leaks into the image and makes it look as to the ink from the photograph has run... this could be something we do in the video

Call sheet and shoot schedule

Ink experiments

Our music video contains imagery that is made through ink running in water. Experiments needed to be done to make sure that this would work and to see how the ink would fall in the water and what it would look like.

I did the experiments in the sink and it was purely to see how it worked. I ran the water and dripped drawing ink, quink and food colouring into the water.

Cast list

Screen testing

Today we screen tested our main performer.  This meant that we practised the lead singer singing along to the song and filmed it in the studio. We ran through it three times so that she got to grips with what she was doing.
